Title 42 › CHAPTER 73 — DEVELOPMENT OF ENERGY SOURCES › SUBCHAPTER II — NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION; NUCLEAR WHISTLEBLOWER PROTECTION › § 5845

Last updated Sep 22, 2026|Official source

Summary

Creates an Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research inside the Commission and requires the Commission to appoint a Director of Nuclear Regulatory Research. The Director serves at the Commission’s pleasure, may report directly to the Commission under section 5849, and must carry out research duties the Commission gives, including recommending what research is needed and doing or hiring out research to support licensing and regulation. The Administrator and other federal agencies must cooperate with the Commission by helping set research priorities, providing research services and information (for reimbursement and under existing law), and giving access to facilities when asked. The law does not reduce the Administration’s safety duties. The Commission must also make a long‑term plan to develop new or improved nuclear powerplant safety systems.
