§7582 Requirements Applicable to Clean-fuel Vehicles

Summary

The EPA must write rules within 24 months after November 15, 1990, that set standards for the clean-fuel vehicles covered by this law. Clean-fuel vehicles weighing 8,500 pounds or less (gvwr) must meet the same federal motor-vehicle requirements that apply to comparable gasoline vehicles of the same type and model year. Clean-fuel vehicles 8,500 pounds gvwr or more must meet the same federal requirements that apply to comparable gasoline or diesel vehicles of the same type and model year. Both follow those rules except for special administration and enforcement rules in this part and any conflicts with the clean-fuel rules. For useful life and in-use testing: light-duty cars and light trucks up to 6,000 lbs gvwr have a useful life of 5 years or 50,000 miles (or the equivalent) when certified at 50,000 miles, and 10 years or 100,000 miles (or the equivalent) when certified at 100,000 miles; however, in-use testing will not be done beyond 7 years or 75,000 miles (or the equivalent). Light-duty trucks over 6,000 lbs gvwr have a useful life of 5 years or 50,000 miles (or the equivalent) when certified at 50,000 miles, and 11 years or 120,000 miles (or the equivalent) when certified at 120,000 miles; however, in-use testing will not be done beyond 7 years or 90,000 miles (or the equivalent).
