Title 43 › Chapter 42— RURAL WATER SUPPLY › Subchapter I— RECLAMATION RURAL WATER SUPPLY › § 2402
Creates a program to help small towns and rural areas in Reclamation States get safe, reliable water. The Secretary may work with non-Federal partners to look for water needs, do studies and designs, and supervise construction of projects that are recommended in a feasibility report and later approved by Congress. Any work must be done with a qualifying non-Federal partner. Within 1 year after December 22, 2006, the Secretary must publish rules in the Federal Register that say who can get help and how projects are prioritized. The rules must consider whether a project serves rural areas or tribes, uses a regional or watershed approach, meets urgent health or water supply needs or gives lasting water-quality benefits, follows legal requirements, and is cost effective. The Secretary may connect projects to existing water infrastructure and may include towns over 50,000 people if they are critical partners.
