Title 43 › Chapter 2— UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY › § 31e
The Secretary, working through the Director and with advice from the advisory committee, must prepare a 5-year plan for the geologic mapping program. The plan must set overall priorities and explain how the program will be run. It must say that the Survey will lead the national effort while supporting State needs, and describe the role and duties of State geological surveys. It must include ways to set short- and long-term priorities for three parts of the program (Federal, State, and education) — for Federal work based on Federal mission needs, key scientific problems, and shared Federal‑State needs; for State work based on in‑state and shared interstate needs; and for education based on Federal and State mission requirements. The plan must also explain how mapping standards will be adopted to keep maps consistent and test their quality, and how the program will track published and ongoing mapping to help planning, share information, and avoid duplicate work.
