Title 43 › Chapter 18— SURVEY OF PUBLIC LANDS › § 753
When a quarter section is split, the dividing line must run north to south. The corners and sizes of the half‑quarter pieces must be figured the same way the earlier rules require. If a fractional section has one hundred and sixty acres or more, it should, as nearly as possible, be cut into half‑quarter parts under rules the Secretary of the Interior sets. When a half‑quarter is split, the dividing line must run east to west, and fractional sections with more or less than one hundred and sixty acres should, as nearly as practicable, be divided into quarter‑quarter parts under the Secretary’s rules.
