Title 43 › Chapter 21— GRANTS IN AID OF RAILROADS AND WAGON ROADS › § 908
Requires any railroad company that must pay for surveys or land transfers for lands given by Congress to put up money when the Secretary of the Interior asks. The company must deposit the required amount into a U.S. government account within ninety days of the Secretary’s demand. The Secretary will say how much is needed and can ask for enough to cover all unsurveyed grant lands or just certain townships. The Interior Department will use the funds, under its rules, to pay for the surveys, office and field work, choosing the specific parcels, and making the transfers. Any money left over must be returned to the company or to whoever it assigns it to.
