Title 43 › Chapter 21— GRANTS IN AID OF RAILROADS AND WAGON ROADS › § 909
If a railroad company must pay the costs to survey, select, or convey lands given to it by an Act of Congress and it does not, within ninety days after notice from the Secretary of the Interior under section 908, put up enough money to cover those costs for the unsurveyed lands named in the notice, the company's ownership and any claims by those under it in those named unsurveyed lands end and become the property of the United States. The Secretary of the Interior must tell the Attorney General, who must immediately start legal action to declare the forfeiture and return the lands to the public domain.
