Title 44 › Chapter 21— NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS ADMINISTRATION › § 2103
The President appoints the Archivist with Senate approval. The Archivist must be chosen for professional skill, not politics. The President can remove the Archivist but must tell both Houses of Congress the reasons. Pay equals Level III of the Executive Schedule (section 5314 of title 5). There is a Deputy Archivist chosen and removable by the Archivist. The Deputy is a career reserved Senior Executive Service position under section 3132(a)(8) of title 5. The Deputy does tasks the Archivist assigns and acts as Archivist during any absence, disability, or until a new Archivist is appointed.
