Ship owner, charterer, manager, captain, or person in charge must give every seaman a written shipping agreement before the seaman starts work. The paper must cover eight main things, including the voyage route and expected length, crew size and jobs, start time, wages, conduct rules and any fines or discipline allowed by law, the food each seaman gets, pay advances or allotments, and other lawful terms. The agreement must be signed by the captain or an owner’s representative and by each seaman. The responsible person must keep the agreement and let the seaman see it.
