Title 46 › Subtitle Subtitle II— Vessels and Seamen › Part G— Merchant Seamen Protection and Relief › Chapter 107— EFFECTS OF DECEASED SEAMEN › § 10702
If a seaman dies during a voyage, the captain must take charge of the seaman’s money and belongings. The captain must put an inventory, the wages owed, and total deductions in the ship’s log, and that entry must be signed by the captain, the chief mate, and an unlicensed crewmember. After following the chapter’s rules, the captain must get a written certificate of compliance from a consular officer or a court clerk. A ship bound for a foreign port can get clearance only when customs has received that certificate.
