Anyone who, trying to cheat, gives false vessel ID to the Secretary or a State issuing authority, or tampers with or falsifies a vessel’s ID number, can be fined under Title 18, jailed up to 2 years, or both. Civil fines up to $10,000 can also be imposed. A vessel and its equipment can be seized and forfeited. If a company breaks these rules, its president or chief executive can be penalized too.
