The Secretary may set a reasonable extra-pay rate for civilian Coast Guard workers who must stay on duty between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m., or who work on Sundays or holidays, when doing vessel-related tasks that include inspections, hiring or discharging crews, measuring vessels, or handling vessel documentation. For nights (not Sundays or holidays), the extra pay is one-half day's pay for each 2 hours of overtime, or for any part of a 2-hour block that is at least one hour, with a cap of 2 and one-half days' pay for any 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. period. For Sundays and holidays the extra pay is 2 additional days' pay. The boat owner, charterer, manager, agent, captain, or person in charge must pay the overtime amount to a designated official, who deposits it into the Treasury. The worker is paid from the Coast Guard’s salary funds, and they get the overtime pay if they were ordered to report and did report, even if the work was not performed.
