Foreign ships from countries with inspection laws like the United States that carry a current inspection certificate must be inspected to verify the ship matches that certificate, except as provided in chapter 37 and section 3505. A country is treated as similar if both it and the U.S. are parties to the International Convention for Safety of Life at Sea, and a foreign certificate is accepted only if that country treats U.S. visiting vessels the same as its own.
