Title 46 › Subtitle Subtitle II— Vessels and Seamen › Part B— Inspection and Regulation of Vessels › Chapter 35— CARRIAGE OF PASSENGERS › § 3504
People selling tickets for trips on passenger ships that have berths or staterooms for at least 50 people and that leave U.S. ports for coastwise or international voyages must tell each potential passenger what safety standards apply to that ship, using the method set by regulation. Ads or brochures in the United States that offer ocean voyages must give the same safety info and must name the country where each ship is registered. For ships that meet the safety rules in section 3505, only the country of registry must be shown. Breaking these rules can lead to fines. The U.S. government can fine up to $10,000. If tickets were sold, the owner, charterer, operator, agent, captain, or others involved can be fined $500 for each ticket sold. The ship itself can also be held responsible.
