Any self-propelled tank ship of at least 10,000 gross tons (measured under federal rules) must carry navigation and safety gear. It must have dual short‑ and long‑range radars with true‑north, an electronic relative‑motion analyzer that meets the Secretary of Transportation's standards, a position‑fixing device, communications equipment, a sonic depth finder, a gyrocompass, and current charts.
