U.S. vessels carrying oil or hazardous bulk cargo must have an inspection certificate that shows they follow the rules. Certificates last up to 5 years and can be renewed; a temporary one may be issued for up to 30 days. Certificates can be suspended or revoked if the vessel no longer meets the certificate conditions.
