Certain vessels must have and use an automatic identification system (AIS) when on U.S. navigable waters. That includes commercial self-propelled vessels at least 65 feet long, vessels carrying more than a passenger count set by the Secretary, towing vessels over 26 feet and 600 horsepower, and any other vessel the Secretary finds needs AIS for safe navigation. The Secretary can exempt a vessel or waive the rule for specific waters if AIS is not needed. The Secretary must write rules that explain how to follow these requirements, including how to operate and maintain the AIS.
