Title 46 › Subtitle Subtitle II— Vessels and Seamen › Part E— Merchant Seamen Licenses, Certificates, and Documents › Chapter 73— MERCHANT MARINERS’ DOCUMENTS › § 7315
Graduation from a nautical school can replace the sea service required by sections 7307 through 7311a and 7313. Finishing a training program that the Secretary approves can also count for up to one-half of those sea service days. The law says how to convert training days to sea days: a classroom day = 2 sea days; a lab or practical day = 4 sea days; a full-mission simulator day = 6 sea days; an underway training day = 1.5 sea days, but the underway training must be approved, fully completed, and on a vessel of the right tonnage for the endorsement. A "training day" means at least 7 hours of training.
