When the Board approves abandonment, it must decide if the land could be used for public purposes like roads, transit, conservation, energy, or recreation. If the land is suitable and not needed for trains, the Board can set rules for selling, leasing, exchanging, or disposing of it and may bar any transfer for up to 180 days unless it was first offered for public purchase on reasonable terms.
