§20132 Visible Markers for Rear Cars

Summary

The Secretary of Transportation must make rules and orders that require the last car of every passenger and commuter train to have at least one very visible marker that is lit at night and when weather makes visibility poor. The last car of every freight train must have very visible markers during darkness and bad weather that reduces visibility. States may keep any law, rule, or order about lighted markers on the rear car of a freight train that was in effect on July 8, 1976, unless that older rule would cause the car to break the federal requirement.
