Title 49 › Subtitle SUBTITLE VII— AVIATION PROGRAMS › Part B— AIRPORT DEVELOPMENT AND NOISE › Chapter 471— AIRPORT DEVELOPMENT › Subchapter I— AIRPORT IMPROVEMENT › § 47140
The Secretary of Transportation must start a program to get public airports to plan for current and future energy needs. Airports must check things like heating and cooling, on-road vehicles and ground support equipment, gate electrification, electric aircraft charging, and vehicles that move passengers and workers to nearby airport-owned sites or an adjacent intermodal facility. They must also review where their energy systems are, their condition, and how much power they can provide, including base load and backup power. The Secretary must pay back airports for the cost of doing this check. Airports that finish the check can get grants from funds made available under section 48103 to buy or build energy-saving equipment or to do development projects that improve efficiency and cut peak power use. To get a grant, an airport must apply as the Secretary requires and certify that it is not postponing any safety projects to get the money.
