Defines key words used in the chapter and says that, unless the chapter says otherwise, the meanings in sections 10102 and 13102 of this title apply. Beneficial owner — someone who has ownership rights but not title, including a trustee of goods sent from overseas who is based in or does business in the U.S.; a carrier or related service provider is not a beneficial owner just for moving or arranging intermodal transport. Carrier — a motor, water, rail carrier, or an ocean common carrier (see section 40102 of title 46) that carries goods in commerce. Container — the ISO freight container defined in Series 1, Freight Containers, 3d Edition (ISO668–1979(E)) and similar boxes. First carrier — the first carrier to move a loaded container or trailer in intermodal transport. Gross cargo weight — weight of the cargo plus packing, ice, pallets, and dunnage. Intermodal transportation — moving a loaded container or trailer from origin to destination by more than one kind of transport across state lines or internationally, whether under one bill of lading or several. Trailer — a nonpowered unit pulled by a truck tractor to carry goods.
