Title 50 › Chapter 33— WAR POWERS RESOLUTION › § 1543a
The President must send Congress a report within 48 hours after any incident where U.S. Armed Forces take part in an attack or hostilities, whether attacking or defending. The report is not needed if the President already sent a required report about the same incident within 48 hours, or if the President had already told Congress before the incident that the forces would be operating under a specific legal authorization. The report must say the legal authority for the action; the date, place, length of the incident, and who else was involved; what U.S. forces took part and their mission; the numbers of combatant and civilian casualties; and any other information the President thinks is appropriate.
