§3993 Desert-land Entries

Title 50 › Chapter 50— SERVICEMEMBERS CIVIL RELIEF › Subchapter V— TAXES AND PUBLIC LANDS › § 3993

Last updated Apr 5, 2026|Official source

Summary

Protects people who filed a desert‑land claim before joining the military from losing the claim if they can’t make required improvements or finish reclaiming the land while they serve. The protection also lasts for 180 days after leaving service and while they are hospitalized or in rehab for a service injury. If honorably discharged and disabled from service, the person can, under rules from the Secretary of the Interior, submit proof and get a land patent without finishing the work or payments. To use these protections, the claimant must file a notice at the local land office within 180 days after entering military service.
