§302302 Program Evaluation

Title 54 › Subtitle Subtitle III— National Preservation Programs › Chapter 3023— STATE HISTORIC PRESERVATION PROGRAMS › § 302302

Last updated Apr 5, 2026|Official source

Summary

The Secretary must review each approved State program at least every 4 years, working with the Council and the State Historic Preservation Officer to see if the program follows the law. If a major part of a program does not follow the law, the Secretary must disapprove it and can suspend contracts or agreements until it is fixed, unless the Secretary believes it will be fixed within a reasonable time. The Secretary will set up oversight rules with State officers to keep quality without creating too much extra work. A State can use its own fiscal audit and management system instead of the Federal one if it meets the same accountability standards and has independent professional peer review. The Secretary may also do periodic fiscal audits and must make sure programs meet the required standards.
