§3126 Libraries and Information Network

Summary

Requires better coordination and use of agricultural libraries and information units. It sets six goals: improve cooperation among those libraries; plan and check information and library needs for agricultural research and education; create a coordination structure linking college and university libraries, Department of Agriculture libraries, and related private and research libraries; give college, university, and USDA staff effective access to food and agricultural literature; support training and research grants for librarians, information scientists, and agricultural scientists; and build working ties with international information and data programs. Creates a Food and Nutrition Information and Education Resources Center inside the National Agricultural Library at the Department of Agriculture. The Center must collect and keep food and nutrition education materials (including research results and training methods) and tell State cooperative extension services, State education agencies, and others about the collections on a regular basis. Congress may provide yearly funding as it decides. The Secretary may use existing facilities, grants, contracts, and require matching funds. No funds for these purposes may buy extra equipment unless a law after September 29, 1977, allows it.
