Title 7 › Chapter 80— WATERMELON RESEARCH AND PROMOTION › § 4901
Lets set up a clear, funded national program to research, advertise, and promote watermelons so they sell better here and abroad. Watermelons are an important crop and a healthy, affordable food. About 2,607,600,000 pounds of watermelons, worth $158,923,000, were produced in 1981. Watermelons are sold across state lines, and even local sales affect national trade. Keeping and growing markets is vital for growers and the economy. The program can be paid for by assessments (fees) on watermelons harvested in the United States or imported for commercial use. The program must help expand markets and improve watermelon use. It cannot set quality rules, control how much growers produce, or stop anyone from growing watermelons.
