Encourages research to learn more about farming systems that protect and improve soil; save soil, water, energy, and other natural resources and wildlife habitat; keep surface and ground water clean; protect the health and safety of people who grow and handle food; improve animal welfare; and create more jobs in agriculture. Key terms are defined simply: sustainable agriculture — has the same meaning as in section 3103 of this title; integrated crop management — a system that combines all controllable crop practices for long-term productivity, profit, and environmental soundness; integrated resource management — a livestock systems approach that combines practices for long-term productive and safe food and environmental protection; agribusiness — a profit-minded producer or organization; extension and State agricultural experiment stations — have the meanings in section 3103 of this title; Secretary — the Secretary of Agriculture; State — each of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, or federally recognized Indian tribes; nonprofit organization — a group that can run agricultural research or education, has experience with sustainable agriculture work, and qualifies under section 501(c) of title 26.
