§8302 Definitions

Summary

Defines the main words used in the chapter about animal pests and diseases. Animal: any member of the animal kingdom except a human. Article: a pest, a disease, or any material or object that could carry them. Disease: has the meaning given by the Secretary of Agriculture. Enter: to move into the commerce of the United States. Import: to move from outside the territorial limits of the United States into them. Export: to move from inside the territorial limits of the United States to a place outside them. Facility: any structure. State: any State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, or any U.S. territory or possession. United States: all of the States. Indian tribe: has the meaning given in 25 U.S.C. 5304. Interstate commerce: trade or traffic between places in different States, between places in the same State that go through another State, or within D.C. or any U.S. territory or possession. Livestock: farm-raised animals. Means of conveyance: property used to move other property. Move: includes carrying, entering, importing, mailing, shipping, transporting, helping or offering to do those things, receiving for those purposes, releasing into the environment, or allowing any of those actions. Pest: organisms that can harm livestock, such as protozoa, plants, bacteria, fungi, viruses or viroids, infectious agents or pathogens, arthropods, parasites, prions, vectors, or similar organisms. Secretary: the Secretary of Agriculture. Veterinary countermeasure: any biological, pharmaceutical, non-pharmaceutical, or other product or equipment (for example vaccines, diagnostics, therapeutics, or disinfectants) used to prevent, detect, respond to, or reduce harm from animal pests or diseases. "This chapter": when used elsewhere, also includes rules or orders the Secretary issues under the chapter.
