Starting February 1, 2025, fishermen can apply for special permits to use deep-set buoy gear to catch swordfish and other big ocean fish off the West Coast. Tier 9 Permit Application Window Opens
You can apply for a limited entry deep-set buoy gear (DSBG) permit under tier 9 between February 1, 2025 and March 31, 2025. NMFS will issue up to 25 permits per year until a total of 300 permits are issued (unless the agency later sets a lower maximum).
Permits Issued First-Come, Priority Rollover
NMFS will issue tier 9 LE DSBG permits on a first-come, first-served basis by the date and time your complete application is received through the National Permits System. NMFS will issue up to 25 permits each year; approved applicants beyond 25 will get priority for permit issuance the following year, in order of their original submission time.
Application Documents, Fees, and Completeness Rule
To apply you must submit a complete application through the National Permits System by 11:59 p.m. Pacific daylight time on March 31, 2025, including the initial issuance form, vessel U.S. Coast Guard documentation or State registration, and payment of required fees. NMFS will consider applications incomplete until all required information is provided and will decline to act on incomplete applications.
