Published Date: 1/7/2025

Notice

Summary

The government is opening up 335.25 acres of land in New Mexico that were set aside almost 100 years ago for the Avalon Reservoir project because they’re no longer needed. Starting January 7, 2025, this land can be sold or used by the public again, which could mean new opportunities for local folks and businesses. The Bureau of Land Management will handle any land not sold, keeping things organized and ready for future use.

335.25 Acres Opened for Sale or Use

You in New Mexico will be able to seek to buy or use 335.25 acres of land that were withdrawn for the Avalon Reservoir project. The lands open to appropriation under the public land laws at 8 a.m. Mountain Time on January 7, 2025, and any unsold lands will be administered by the Bureau of Land Management.

Mining Claims Kept Closed Until Conveyance

If you plan to make mining claims on these New Mexico lands, you cannot locate or enter them under U.S. mining laws until the lands are conveyed out of Federal ownership or an opening order is issued. That restriction applies as the lands open to appropriation on January 7, 2025.

Filing Deadline and Application Priority Rule

Applications to appropriate any of these lands that arrive at or before 8 a.m. Mountain Time on January 7, 2025, will be treated as filed simultaneously; applications received after that time will be considered in the order received. Any applications received before that date and time will be rejected.
