Airworthiness Directives; The Boeing Company Airplanes

Rule

Summary

The FAA is making a new rule for all Boeing 767-200, -300, and -300F airplanes because some landing gear parts might be damaged from a maintenance mistake. Airlines must replace the affected landing gear cylinders by February 12, 2025, to keep flights safe. This fix helps prevent landing gear failures and keeps passengers and crews secure, with costs depending on how many parts need swapping.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 3 costs, 0 mixed.

Mandatory 767 landing-gear inspections and fixes

If you operate a Boeing 767-200, -300, or -300F airplane, you must follow Boeing Alert Requirements Bulletin 767-32A0253 RB and replace any affected main landing gear (MLG) outer cylinders as required. The AD is effective February 12, 2025, and applies to all Model 767-200, -300, and -300F airplanes.

High replacement cost if cylinder needs swap

If an inspection finds an affected MLG outer cylinder, the FAA estimates replacement costs at about $500,000 for parts plus $16,065 in labor, for a total of $516,065 per replacement. The FAA states it cannot determine how many aircraft will need replacements.

Estimated inspection cost per airplane

The FAA estimates an inspection or maintenance-records check will take up to 3 work‑hours at $85 per hour, costing up to $255 per airplane. The FAA estimates this AD affects 574 U.S.-registered airplanes, with total inspection costs up to $146,370 for U.S. operators.

STC ST01920SE holders need no AMOC

If your airplane has Supplemental Type Certificate ST01920SE (winglets), installation of that STC does not affect the ability to do the AD actions, and you do not need a "change in product" alternative method of compliance (AMOC) to comply with this AD.
