Notice

Summary

The government is getting ready to study the environmental effects of a big offshore wind farm planned about 24 miles off Fire Island, New York. Vineyard Mid-Atlantic wants to build and run this clean energy project on a huge ocean area, which could bring new jobs and green power but also needs careful review. People have until March 3, 2025, to share their thoughts, and there will be free online meetings in February to learn more and join the conversation.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Supplies ~2 GW of Clean Power to New York

Vineyard Mid-Atlantic proposes to deliver about 2 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind power from a lease area 24 miles south of Fire Island to help New York meet its renewable goals. The Project would connect offshore export cables to onshore substations in Nassau and/or Suffolk County and to points of interconnection (Uniondale, Melville, or Queens).

May Increase Local Job Opportunities

BOEM and the notice say the Project is expected to increase job opportunities and support economic activity related to offshore wind construction and operations. The public can weigh in during scoping before BOEM’s draft EIS (NOA expected June 2026).

Could Harm Commercial Fisheries and Tourism

The notice says commercial fisheries and for-hire recreational fishing could be impacted by construction, new structures, and changes to benthic and fish habitat, and that visual impacts could affect recreation and tourism. BOEM will analyze these potential adverse effects in the EIS.

Onshore Landfall and Infrastructure Effects in New York

The Project would land export cables at up to three possible sites (Rockaway Beach, Atlantic Beach, Jones Beach) and connect to new onshore substations in Nassau and/or Suffolk County, which could affect local land use, coastal infrastructure, and nearby communities. BOEM will analyze impacts on land use, coastal infrastructure, and related economic and employment effects in the EIS.
