FDA testing found morphine on poppy seeds ranging from 1 mg/kg to 520 mg/kg (median 70 mg/kg; mean 120.4 mg/kg) and codeine from 0.8 mg/kg to 255 mg/kg (median 85 mg/kg; mean 113.1 mg/kg). FDA reports nine deaths tied to homemade "poppy seed tea" and says it will use collected information to decide what actions, if any, to take to keep poppy seed products safe.

The FDA is asking farmers, processors, importers, distributors, and sellers who handle poppy seeds to provide information about growing, harvesting, processing, testing, and distribution practices—including methods to reduce opiate alkaloid levels.
