Published Date: 1/16/2025
Notice
Summary
Guatemala and Honduras have been added to the list of places affected by screwworm, a nasty pest that can harm animals. Starting late October and early November 2024, animals like horses, cows, pigs, and dogs coming from these countries will need extra checks, treatments, and sometimes quarantine before entering the U.S. This helps keep our livestock safe and healthy without breaking the bank or causing delays.

Guatemala and Honduras added to screwworm list
The USDA/APHIS added Guatemala to its list of regions affected with screwworm effective November 1, 2024, and Honduras effective October 25, 2024. This means animals from those countries are now subject to APHIS import restrictions and official public notification has been posted.
Horses face inspection, treatment, 7-day quarantine
Horses imported from regions APHIS lists as affected with screwworm (including Guatemala and Honduras) must have pre-embarkation and post-arrival inspection and any needed treatment, and they must be quarantined in the United States for 7 days after arrival with a veterinarian exam before release. These rules come from 9 CFR Sec. 93.308(a)(3).
Ruminants and swine need inspection and treatment
Ruminants and swine from regions APHIS lists as affected with screwworm (including Guatemala and Honduras) must be inspected and treated for screwworm as required in 9 CFR Secs. 93.405(a)(3) and 93.505(b). These requirements are the same as for horses except they do not include the 7-day quarantine and final examination.
Imported dogs must be inspected and treated
All dogs from regions APHIS lists as affected with screwworm (including Guatemala and Honduras) must be inspected and, if necessary, treated for screwworm before importation under 9 CFR Sec. 93.600. This applies to dogs arriving from those countries beginning on the listed effective dates.
