Summary
Marshall University has finished checking its collection of Native American human remains and related items from a West Virginia archaeological site. They found one individual’s remains and some missing objects but are still searching for them. Starting February 18, 2025, these remains and items can be returned to the affiliated Native tribes, with no costs or risks involved.

Repatriation Available Starting Feb 18, 2025
If you are one of the Indian Tribes or a lineal descendant identified in this notice, you may submit a written request to Marshall University to repatriate the human remains and associated funerary objects on or after February 18, 2025. Marshall University will accept requests from the tribes or from other tribes or lineal descendants who show by a preponderance of the evidence that they are culturally affiliated, and the university will determine the most appropriate requestor if competing requests are received.
Most Associated Objects Are Missing
The associated funerary objects consist of 37 fragments of unmodified faunal remains, but 30 of those fragments are currently missing from the collection and Marshall University continues to search for them. The missing items are not currently available for repatriation.
No Known Hazardous Treatments Reported
Marshall University reports it has no knowledge or record that any potentially hazardous substances were used to treat the human remains or associated funerary objects, which indicates no known contamination risk for handling and repatriation.
Who May File Repatriation Requests
Written repatriation requests may be submitted by any one or more of the Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations named in this notice, or by other tribes or lineal descendants who can show by a preponderance of the evidence that they are a lineal descendant or culturally affiliated. Joint requests are treated as a single request; competing requests will be resolved by Marshall University.
