FAA Orders Checks on Leaky Plane Toilet Extinguishers

Published Date: 3/18/2025

Rule

Summary

The FAA is making sure all ATR42 and ATR72 airplanes get a check-up on their lavatory fire extinguishers because a manufacturing defect might cause them to leak and not work in a fire. Pilots and airlines need to inspect and replace faulty extinguishers ASAP and can’t install the bad parts anymore. This keeps everyone safer without breaking the bank, but it’s gotta happen on a set schedule.

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Operators must inspect and replace extinguishers

If you operate ATR42 or ATR72 airplanes, the FAA requires an inspection (a weight check) and replacement, as applicable, of certain lavatory compartment fire extinguishers and prohibits installing the affected parts. The directive incorporates by reference a European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) AD specifying the affected parts and required actions.

Improves passenger safety on ATR aircraft

If you fly on ATR42 or ATR72 airplanes, this FAA rule addresses a manufacturing defect that could cause leakage at the eutectic tip of lavatory fire extinguishers and loss of pressure. The inspections and replacements required by the AD are intended to ensure extinguishers will work in a fire and address the unsafe condition.
