Coastal Residents Rate Their Beach Vibes for NOAA

Published Date: 6/6/2025

Notice

Summary

NOAA is updating and extending surveys that ask people living near special coastal areas about their opinions and habits. These surveys help leaders make smart choices to protect and manage these beautiful places. About 2,500 people will spend 10 minutes each answering questions, with public comments open for 30 more days before final approval.

Local Residents Asked to Take Short Survey

NOAA will survey 2,534 residents (age 18+) who live near three National Estuarine Research Reserves: 45 counties and independent cities within a one-hour drive of the York River in Virginia, and communities in three coastal counties in Alabama and Mississippi. Each selected respondent will be asked to spend about 10 minutes answering the questionnaire (total annual burden 422.3 hours); participation is voluntary and this is a one-time collection for these regions.

Survey Data To Inform Coastal Management

NOAA will use the survey data to support decision-makers in the National Estuarine Research Reserve System, help meet Coastal Zone Management Act and NEPA obligations, and support conservation, management, and public access planning for the targeted reserves (Chesapeake Bay-VA, Weeks Bay, and Grand Bay). The agency says the data will strengthen decision-making, increase capacity, and benefit State and local officials.
