The FCC is checking in on a form used by people and businesses who want to test new communication tech. You’ve got until February 10, 2026, to share your ideas and help shape the process!

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Experimental License Renewal Requirement

If you operate in the Experimental Radio Service, you must use FCC Form 405 to apply for renewal of your radio station license. The regular license period for these stations is either two or five years and the form is required to obtain or retain the license; the FCC staff uses the form to evaluate renewal requests and any requested changes.

Paperwork Burden and Estimated Costs

The FCC estimates 520 respondents file FCC Form 405, with each response taking about 2.25 hours. The total annual burden is 1,170 hours and the total annual cost is estimated at $215,800; responses occur on occasion and include a two-year reporting requirement.

Small Businesses Invited to Suggest Burden Reductions

The FCC is asking for public comments on ways to reduce the Form 405 paperwork burden and specifically seeks ideas to further reduce the burden on small business concerns with fewer than 25 employees. Comments must be submitted on or before February 10, 2026.
