VW Gets Waiver for Audi Models' Tire Labeling Glitch

Published Date: 12/30/2025

Notice

Summary

Volkswagen found a small issue with some 2019-2020 Audi A6, A7, and A6 Allroad models about tire and rim info that doesn’t fully meet safety rules. They told the government back in 2020 and asked to skip fixes since it doesn’t affect safety. The government agreed, so no recalls or costs for owners—just a thumbs-up to keep driving safely!

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Owners of ~652 Audis Won't Get a Recall

If you own one of approximately 652 model year 2019-2020 Audi A6 or A7, or 2020 Audi A6 Allroad vehicles (manufactured between September 24, 2018 and May 14, 2020), NHTSA found the tire-placard labeling noncompliance inconsequential and granted Volkswagen an exemption from the obligation to notify owners and provide a free remedy under 49 U.S.C. 30118 and 30120.

Unsold Vehicles Will Be Corrected Before Sale

Volkswagen reported the labeling issue was corrected in production as of May 15, 2020, and said affected vehicles held at the factory and unsold vehicles in dealer inventory will be corrected before being sold.

Dealers Still Barred from Selling Uncorrected Cars

Although NHTSA granted Volkswagen an exemption from owner notification and remedy obligations for vehicles no longer controlled by the manufacturer, distributors and dealers remain prohibited from selling, offering for sale, or introducing into interstate commerce any noncompliant vehicles under their control after Volkswagen notified them that the noncompliance existed.
