Up to $750,000 in prizes

NASA's Deep Space Food Challenge offers a total prize purse of $750,000 USD for U.S. Teams: up to $300,000 for an overall winner, up to $200,000 and $100,000 for second and third place, and up to three $50,000 categorical awards.

Prize money limited to U.S. teams

Only U.S. Teams are eligible to receive prize money. To be eligible to win a NASA prize, individuals must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and over age 18; organizations must be incorporated in and maintain a primary place of business in the United States; Team Leaders must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. International Teams may participate but are not eligible to be awarded prize money.

Required proof within 3 business days

Teams selected for an award must provide proof of citizenship/permanent residency, proof of primary place of business, proof of incorporation, and/or proof of student visa within 3 business days to be eligible for the prize; failure to comply will result in disqualification from winning a prize from NASA.

Foreign nationals may join U.S. teams

Teams may include foreign nationals and still be eligible for prize money if the foreign national signs a disclosure acknowledging ineligibility for cash prizes and is (1) an employee of an eligible U.S. entity, (2) an owner of such an entity with foreign ownership under 50%, (3) a contractor under written contract to such an entity, or (4) a full-time student with a valid student visa and compliance with laws.

Registration deadline: July 31, 2026

Registration for Deep Space Food Challenge: Mars to Table opens January 12, 2026 and closes July 31, 2026; no further registration requests will be accepted after July 31, 2026.

Challenge conducted virtually

Deep Space Food Challenge: Mars to Table will be conducted virtually; information about any possible in-person awards ceremonies will be posted on the Challenge website.
