Energy Dept Hits Pause on Green Rules for New Federal Buildings

Published Date: 4/20/2026

Rule

Summary

Starting April 20, 2026, the Department of Energy is pausing new rules that limit fossil fuel use in new and renovated federal buildings. This means federal agencies have more time—until September 1, 2026—to follow these rules while DOE reviews them. The change affects all new federal buildings and major renovations, giving agencies a breather before spending money on big energy upgrades.

Compliance Pause for Federal Building Rules

Starting April 20, 2026, the Department of Energy paused the compliance date for the fossil-fuel limits in 10 CFR part 433, subpart B and 10 CFR part 435, subpart B. Federal agencies are not required to comply with those provisions during this pause, which runs until September 1, 2026.

Targets and Subpart B Requirements Stayed

The stay specifically suspends subpart B (including Appendix A) of 10 CFR part 433 and 10 CFR part 435, which set fossil fuel-generated energy consumption requirements and targets for building types and climate zones for FY2020-2024 and FY2025-2029. Because those provisions are stayed, Federal agencies are not required to meet those targets while DOE reviews the rule.
