Extended Probation and Trial Periods Continue

If you work at a Science and Technology Reinvention Laboratory (STRL), STRL rules continue to allow probationary or trial periods longer than one year as authorized in STRL Federal Register notices. This authority is implemented no earlier than April 21, 2026 and applies under the STRL implementing regulations.

Waiver of Adverse-Action Procedures During Probation

If you are serving an STRL probationary or trial period, adverse action procedures in 5 U.S.C. chapter 75 and certain parts of 5 CFR are waived so termination during that extended period can occur without using those adverse action procedures. The updated waiver citations take effect no earlier than April 21, 2026 and apply as described in STRL Federal Register notices.
