Museum to return two sacred Hawaiian items

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science intends to return two sacred Native Hawaiian cultural items — a kukui stone lamp and a wooden `umeke (bowl) — to affiliated Native Hawaiian groups, including the Hui Iwi Kuamoʻo. The repatriation may occur on or after May 26, 2026, and the notice states that no money changes hands in the transfer.

Who may request repatriation

Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization may submit a written request for repatriation by showing, by a preponderance of the evidence, that they are a lineal descendant or culturally affiliated organization. If competing requests are received, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science will determine the most appropriate requestor; joint requests are treated as a single request.
