Repatriation Available to Assiniboine & Sioux

The Field Museum identified human hair clippings belonging to one Native American individual that it links to the Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes. These human remains can be returned to the tribes on or after May 26, 2026. The hair was accessioned into the museum collection in 1939 and the museum reports no hazardous substances are present.

Who Can Request Repatriation

Written requests for repatriation must be sent to the Field Museum's NAGPRA Director (contact details in the notice). Requests may be submitted by any of the named Indian Tribes, any lineal descendant, or another tribe/organization that shows cultural affiliation; competing requests will be resolved by the Field Museum. Repatriation may occur on or after May 26, 2026.
