Repatriation Available After May 26, 2026
If you are a member or lineal descendant of the listed tribes, Indiana University has identified 17 Native American individuals and 13 associated funerary objects from Kentucky that may be returned starting May 26, 2026. The notice names the Absentee-Shawnee Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma; Cherokee Nation; Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians; Miami Tribe of Oklahoma; Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma; Quapaw Nation; Shawnee Tribe; The Osage Nation; and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma as culturally affiliated.
Who Can Request Repatriation and Process
Written requests for repatriation must be sent to Dr. Jayne-Leigh Thomas at Indiana University (address and email provided in the notice). Requests may be submitted by any one or more of the tribes listed in the notice or by a lineal descendant or other tribe/organization that shows cultural affiliation by a preponderance of the evidence; repatriation may occur on or after May 26, 2026. If competing requests are received, Indiana University must decide the most appropriate requestor; joint requests are treated as a single request.
