Pipeline Tech Upgrade: Remote Checks for Corrosion Gear
Published Date: 4/24/2026
Proposed Rule
Summary
This new rule lets pipeline companies check their corrosion-fighting equipment remotely instead of always in person, making it easier and faster to keep pipelines safe. It affects operators of hazardous liquid and carbon dioxide pipelines and aims to save time and money while keeping pipelines protected. Analyzed Economic Effects
2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.
Remote checks allowed for rectifiers
If you operate hazardous liquid or carbon dioxide pipelines, you may perform the required electrical checks of rectifiers and other cathodic protection devices remotely. The rule requires that any device monitored remotely also be physically inspected at least once each calendar year, with intervals between inspections not exceeding 15 months. Devices whose failure would jeopardize structural protection still must be checked at least six times each calendar year (intervals not exceeding 2.5 months), and other interference bonds must be checked at least once each calendar year (intervals not exceeding 15 months).
Three‑year reevaluation requirement
If you operate pipeline systems, you must reevaluate certain external corrosion control measures at least once every 3 calendar years, with intervals not exceeding 39 months. This codifies the reevaluation frequency in Sec. 195.573(b)(2).
