FAA Orders Boeing 737 Checks for Cracks and Corrosion Near Drains

Published Date: 4/27/2026

Proposed Rule

Summary

The FAA wants all Boeing 737-600 to 900ER planes checked for cracks and corrosion near the aft drain mast to keep flights safe. They’re asking for inspections and repairs if needed, with repeated checks over time. Comments on this plan are open until June 11, 2026, and while it might cost some money, it’s all about preventing bigger problems down the runway.

Mandatory inspections for 737-600 to -900ER

The FAA proposes a new airworthiness directive that would require inspections and repetitive checks of the aft drain mast area and surrounding fuselage skin for all Boeing Model 737-600, -700, -700C, -800, -900, and -900ER airplanes. The rule requires visual, detailed, and HFEC inspections and applicable on-condition repairs or alternative inspections per Boeing Alert Requirements Bulletin 737-53A1421 RB (dated March 20, 2025).

Estimated compliance costs and fleet size

The FAA estimates this proposed AD would affect 1,987 U.S.-registered airplanes. The agency estimates an external general visual inspection at 14 work-hours × $85/hour = $1,190 per airplane (total $2,364,530 for U.S. operators), and detailed/HFEC inspections at 16 work-hours × $85/hour = $1,360 per airplane per inspection cycle (total $2,702,320 per inspection cycle for U.S. operators).

Fix prevents rapid decompression risk

The FAA says cracks near the aft drain mast could prevent a principal structural element from sustaining limit loads and could result in rapid decompression and loss of structural integrity. The proposed inspections and on-condition repairs are intended to address that unsafe condition on the affected Boeing 737 models.
