Afghan Cultural Imports Restricted Through 2029

If you collect, import, or work with archaeological or ethnological items from Afghanistan, the U.S. is extending emergency import restrictions through April 28, 2029. The extension takes effect April 28, 2026, and importation remains restricted unless the conditions in 19 U.S.C. 2606 and 19 CFR 12.104c are met; the covered items are listed in CBP Dec. 22-04.

No New Fees or Costs From Extension

CBP states the extension and updated language preserve protection of Afghanistan’s cultural heritage without changing fees or costs. The extension is effective April 28, 2026 and continues through April 28, 2029, so collectors and importers will not face new fees as part of this rule change.
