Return of Two Ceramic Vessels
The Robert S. Peabody Institute of Archaeology intends to repatriate two unassociated funerary ceramic vessels. The items were removed from Ossabaw Island in 1895 and sent to the Institute in 1906, and repatriation may occur on or after June 4, 2026.
Affiliation With Muscogee (Creek) Nation
The Institute determined the two ceramic vessels have a cultural affiliation with The Muscogee (Creek) Nation. That affiliation is a basis for repatriation decisions under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
How To Request Repatriation
Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization may submit a written request for repatriation if they show by a preponderance of the evidence that they are culturally affiliated. If competing requests are received, the Institute must determine the most appropriate requestor; joint requests count as a single request.
